But, unlike Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil, unmarried couples who share a home are still left exposed to unfair settlements, leading lawyers have warned.More than 6 million couples in the UK cohabit, according to the Office for National Statistics – more than double the number 20 years ago. However, contrary to popular belief, a common-law spouse or partner carries no legal status in English law, meaning that the distribution of cohabitees’ assets can end in lengthy and costly disputes.
