Who gets housing benefit and what does it cost?


The government spent £24bn on housing benefit in 2014. More than half of claimants under 35 are single mothers and many live in deprived coastal townsHousing benefit pays for all or part of the rent of people on low incomes in England and Wales. The benefit is means tested, taking into account earnings, how many people you care for, your rent and whether anyone in the household is sick, disabled, or a full-time carer.
