The chancellor has promised a major housebuilding programme, but Britain may not have enough bricks and bricklayersBritain’s housebuilding capabilities are in the spotlight: No 10 has announced that ministers will commission 13,000 homes on five sites around southern England, the largest housing project led by central government since the redevelopment of the Docklands in east London in the 1980s.This follows the autumn statement, in which chancellor George Osborne committed to building 400,000 new homes before the 2020 general election. He believes these will be in addition to those already being built in the UK, which still fall short of the minimum 250,000 homes a year we need to meet demand.
