Half of them were built just in the last five years
432 Park Avenue in midtown Manhattan
With the completion of the 432 Park Avenue tower in New York City in December 2015, the number of supertall – measuring at least 300 metres – towers in the world has now reached 100, according to the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat.
Located in Manhattan, the super-slim 432 Park Avenue is currently the tallest all-residential building in the world, and ranks 14th overall. It is also the seventh supertall building in New York.
Residences are being sold from USD16.95 million to at least USD76.5 million for full-floor penthouses. The top-level penthouse already sold for around USD95 million.
It took 80 years, from 1930 to 2010, for the first half of supertall buildings to be completed. But the last five years has seen this figure double, with the majority of supertall towers being located in the Middle East and Asia.
Mainland China has become a major producer of tall structures. According to the Wall Street Journal, China built the most number of 200-metre skyscapers annually for the eighth consecutive year, notwithstanding the economic slowdown on the Mainland.

“China continues to build more of these towers than any other country, and with over 300 such buildings under construction at the time of this report, it’s plausible to assume that the country’s momentum will continue in the near future,” the Council stated.
Burj Khalifa remains the official tallest building on Earth, but there are future tallest building candidates under construction, such as Jeddah’s Kingdom Tower, or still in the planning stages.
More than 100 new supertall skyscrapers are projected to be completed in the next 5-6 years, making the supertall category crowded.
An elite category of “megatall” buildings – measuring at least 600 metres high – could be a new benchmark. At present only three megatall structures have been completed, but that is expected to double in the next decade.
