Already an icon of the Taipei skyline, shooting into the sky with its 101 floors and over 2 million square feet, Taipei 101 is one of the world’s tallest buildings, period. However, it has now earned the accolade of being the world’s tallest green building.
With CBRE’s Sustainability Asia team acting as consultants, the skyscraper has become the highest scoring LEED v4 project in the world, the first to reach the 90 points threshold.
Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) is a rating system developed by the US Green Building Council (USGBC), now prominent in the green building sector internationally.
In Asia, some 6,700 projects have been registered, and over 2,100 projects are now LEED certified as green buildings.
First built in 2004, the building is now outfitted with the very latest in sustainable technology, which not only gains them eco kudos, but also significantly reduces their financial outgoings.

For example, the new design features have enabled Taipei 101 to reduce portable water use by 30%, saving roughly 28,000,000 litres of portable water every year.
Global Director of Sustainability at CBRE, Gary Thomas, says: “Through our industry-leading sustainability programs and long-established track record of LEED for Existing Building certification, CBRE has helped clients realize approximately USD 358 million in asset value enhancements.”
To add to this, Armelle Le Bihan, ESD engineer and Green Building Consultant in Thailand previously told Property Report:
“Green Building is not a tree hugger’s trend. Although they do positively respond to environmental issues, they also make true business sense. They have 14% lower operational costs, 30% higher occupant satisfaction and enjoy a 7% increased asset value compared to non-green buildings.”
We look forward to more exciting advancements in the world of green buildings.
