On 9 November, the impossible happened — or so many thought. Hillary Clinton, whom many had expected to have the US presidency in the bag, ended up losing to Donald J. Trump, the controversial, polarising candidate who had been constantly criticised and even widely ridiculed throughout his entire campaign.
If most US media outlets were to be believed, Trump stood almost no chance of winning. No way was a brash, arrogant loudmouth many saw as racist, xenophobic and sexist going to become the 45th president of the United States. And yet, he will.
Reactions to the results from those opposed to a Trump presidency have ranged from utter disbelief and shock to peaceful protests to violent riots. Those who supported him, of course, are delighted and excited to see what will happen after he takes office in January 2017. Unfortunately, the more extreme elements of the right, who make up part of the “alt-right” movement, have also come out of the woodwork.
But beyond that, Trump’s talk of bilateral trade deals, job creation, and economic reform had us wondering: what of the US property market, and what does this mean for foreign investors? We spoke to a few people hoping they would shed light on the industry’s prospects now that Trump is to be president; read the full report on pages 16 and 17.
Elsewhere in this issue, we look back on 2016, take a walk down memory lane in Queenstown, and take a trip Down Under. And if you’re wondering what to do with your home this Christmas, we have some ideas for you.
Merry Christmas and happy holidays to all our readers!
