If this perfectly preserved, tiny town wasn’t in deepest Wales, it would be heaving with Prezzos and 4x4sWhat’s going for it? I hope you’ve worked up an appetite. You’ll need it. For a teeny-tiny town, Montgomery is a food powerhouse. Breakfast, elevenses and lunch are taken care of, thanks to the town’s stash of smokehouses, flour mills, vineyards, brew houses, cider houses and all manner of sheep and pig and beef farms. Room for afternoon tea? Ivy House Cafe is for you. And dinner, of course, at Michelin-starred The Checkers. Thank heavens it’s so hilly. You can work it all off going up hill and down dale exploring Broad Street, wall-to-wall Georgian town houses and a cutie little clocktower atop the town hall. Then there’s the castle on its hummock and the local church, with astonishing carved rood screen and misericords (first-time Let’s Move To… mention of misericords, there). Then I think it’s time for last orders and late supper at the Dragon. What a town. Were it not in the middle of the mid-Wales countryside, it’d be overrun with Prezzos and 4x4s.
