After Another Kind of Life? This could be the place for youWhat’s going for it? You want affordable homes? I’ll give you affordable homes! Only in the middle of Wales. And not on a train line. Ta-dah! Welcome to Llanidloes. Far from most places except Machynlleth but, to compensate, very affordable and very splendid, with its pretty old market hall and little bridges over the Severn, here all teensy-weensy close to its source. “Be warned,” says the town’s ever-so-slightly-eccentric website, “the place is dangerously addictive. You might never want to leave.” It seems to attract those after Another Kind of Life, one that doesn’t involve mortgages requiring hedge funds, and does involve copious pottering around bookshops and supping fairtrade tea. Or “ageing hippies”, says the Rough Guide, a little unkindly. I, though, have seen a younger, contemporary, more artisanally bearded type of hippy here. Its reputation perhaps dates back to the 19th century, when Chartists attacked special constables sent here by The State to quell unrest among flannel weavers. Today there is less revolution, more wholefood delis, independent shops with jolly awnings, veggie cafes and the HQ of the Quilt Association. Quilters of the world, unite!The case against This spirited little town is keeping its head above water, but it could do with jobs, growth and investment, especially for the younger generation.
