Sea, silence, seals – yes, really – all but an hour from LondonOMG. There are seals an hour outside London. No, not in a zoo. In real life. Genuine, bona fide seals. They’re of the common-or-garden variety, true, but they are seals nonetheless, lounging on the mudflats beyond Burnham, just a commute away from Liverpool Street station. To be quite honest, I’m loth to tell you about Burnham. I want to gobble it up all for myself. If I could only persuade the Other Arf to up sticks, I’d be there in my white weatherboarded cottage before you could say Colchester oysters. The landscape is like a smudgy watercolour, half-solid, half-liquid, all salt marsh and sky; and the town’s a Dickensian lucky dip of wooden cottages, Georgian bay-windowed inns and Victorian terraces. There’s a 30s modernist gem (the Royal Corinthian Yacht Club, designed in 1931 by Joseph Emberton, for the architect nerds among you). A cute old cinema.
