Do you need UK citizenship to get a mortgage?


Q I am a UK citizen and my wife is a Filipino citizen who is on a spouse visa which allows her to live and work in the UK. Currently this visa is scheduled for one more year, at which point it can be renewed for a further two. Only at the end of this three-year period can she apply for permanent residence.We have been living and working together in the UK for just over 18 months now and wish to buy a flat or small house but have been advised that most, if not all mortgage lenders will not accept an application for a joint mortgage unless my wife has a permanent residency visa.
