Thanks to the recently concluded 2015 APEC Summit in Manila, Philippines, the Yoda chair – designed by Filipino industrial designer Kenneth Cobonpue, and named after a popular Star Wars character – has been dubbed “2015’s most photographed chair,” according to Inquirer Lifestyle.
Featuring prominently at the high-profile welcome dinner for APEC leaders, including US President Barack Obama, Philippine President Benigno “Noynoy” S. Aquino III and Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, the wild-grass–looking rattan chair was a hit in the media and on the internet.

Cobonpue’s especially-made Yoda chairs at the APEC Summit were later sold at an auction for the benefit of UNICEF, collecting millions of pesos, according to Rappler.com. The most expensive Yoda chair was for PHP2.05 million (USD40,000), and was used by Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau (ABC News has a whole news story about his tag as an #APECHottie). Obama’s Yoda chair’s winning bid was for a close PHP2 million (USD39,000).
Maison&Objet Asia Fair 2014 previously named the Cebu City native as the Asian Designer of the Year for his use of groundbreaking technology in his eco-friendly furniture designs, for which he recently defended his intellectual rights by publicly destroying fake copies of the Yoda chair and other products.
