An “art city” featuring works of local artist is coming to a mountain community in La Trinidad, Benguet, a province on Luzon island in northern Philippines.
The Philippine Daily Inquirer reports that Stone Hill, home to some 500 houses, will soon feature giant murals and colourful pavements similar to the famous ‘favelas’ of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
Venus Quinto-Tan, director of the Department of Tourism (DOT) in the Cordillera region, said the project is of a “beautification” initiative to boost tourism in the area and promote it as a safe, clean and liveable city.

So far, around 200 households have agreed to the proposal, according to La Trinidad Mayor Edna Tabanda, who signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the DOT this month.
Favela art village in Brazil
Benguet’s own favela art city was to be sponsored by two famous paint brands in the country, according to a September 2015 report by Manila-based news agency Rappler.com.
At least 15 members of the Tam-awan Village Artists association have expressed interest to join the project.
The beautification committee has targeted the end of Q1 2016 to complete the installation of murals and coloured pavements, per arts and culture website Spot.ph.
