It is widely thought that wages are the key, if not the sole, reason we work. But, says Adrian Furnham, there’s no real evidence that cash either motivates or makes us happyHow many people work just for the money? Fewer than we, or our bosses, might think. Economists assume people behave rationally towards money. But they couldn’t be more wrong, and the power of money to demotivate is much higher than its power to motivate.Let’s begin with the simple belief that money brings happiness. Using data from the US, plotting personal income over the past 50 years produces a satisfyingly ascendant 45-degree line.
