\nThe artist\u2019s residence is filled with plants, vintage furniture \u2013 and dogsWhen Gretchen R\u00f6ehrs graduated in 2012, she moved from her parents\u2019 rural Missouri house to California with $20 to her name. She slept on a friend\u2019s sofa in Palo Alto and wrote \u201clovely letters\u201d to Apple, Google and other digital behemoths, looking for a job. She had studied fashion design but not long into her degree realised it wasn\u2019t for her. It was while she was an intern at Vogue in New York that she had an even bigger revelation. \u201cI was working on vogue.com, and discovered that you can translate something so rich in print into something even more beautiful online.\u201d That was the point, she says, when she fell in love with digital.But Silicon Valley wasn\u2019t as welcoming as she\u2019d hoped. \u201cVogue means nothing out here,\u201d she laughs. \u201cMost people see fashion as frivolous and feminine \u2013 it\u2019s so frustrating.
