\nIt’s perfect for dreamy, dramatic viewsWhat’s going for it? I do love Sheffield. That “ironic” schtick about it being the Rome of South Yorkshire with its seven hills (though I counted 12) isn’t that far-fetched. Of course, lacking the Colosseum might be considered a\u00a0handicap, and it does want for scorching sun. But those hills, and the deep incised valleys in between, mean Sheffield is the equal of any for dreamy, dramatic views. High on Nether Edge, you can catch glimpses of long-distant suburbs and flashes of glowering countryside. I like a\u00a0city where you can see the outside from inside: it means you don’t get claustrophobic. Ecclesall Road’s my choice of neighbourhood. We used to go on family trips here to visit my sister, the first to fly the nest, at\u00a0university. We’d gobble burgers at Uncle Sam’s \u2013 still there. Twenty-five years on, though, the area’s inevitably gentrified, but it isn’t, blissfully, overrun with Starbucks and Stradas. Instead, there are spots such as the Front Parlour on Sharrow Vale Road, the vintage shop of your dreams: run by a couple of lovely ladies, and a tie doesn’t cost \u00a320.The case against Not a sausage.
