\nZeli Ismail bought a freehold property for cash \u2013 but he was caught out by an obscure chargeProfessional footballer Zeli Ismail had never heard of a\u201crentcharge\u201d when he bought his freehold home in Wolverhampton in May 2015. But the overlooked clause in his property\u2019s deeds has led to the Bury midfielder facing large legal bills and threatened with eviction.Ismail\u2019s story is rare \u2013 but terrifying. He bought his home outright, and settled down to family life with his partner and young daughter. The first time the 24-year-old saw the word \u201crentcharge\u201d was when he received a solicitor\u2019s letter in December 2017 incorrectly describing him as \u201ca tenant\u201d. After a call, an amended letter arrived in January this year entitled \u201cOutstanding rentcharges and fees\u201d and included an invoice for backdated charges of \u00a3112.51, \u00a33.61 interest, \u00a3240 for two letters, and solicitor\u2019s fees of \u00a3480.
