\nThere\u2019s an art to it, and a lot of fun to be had, even on a limited budget\u201cArt is a crucial layer in telling the story of a room,\u201d says designer Martin Brudnizki. \u201cIt adds a whole other dimension to a space.\u201d He should know. The mastermind behind some of London\u2019s most sumptuous dining rooms, from the Ivy to J Sheekey, he recently unveiled a \u00a355m makeover of Annabel\u2019s. It\u2019s art that helped to dictate the extreme maximalism of the Mayfair nightclub\u2019s decor (including the Picasso formerly known as Girl with a Red Beret and Pompom, but renamed Annabel by owner Richard Caring). \u201cWe built a narrative around the art,\u201d explains Brudnizki, who used paintings by the British artist Ian Sidaway as the starting point for the series of botanical murals that decorate the club\u2019s Garden Room. \u201cSometimes, though, the art comes last and is simply used to amplify the design story.\u201dIt\u2019s an approach he takes home with him, too. Visual art adds a layer of interest to the flat he shares with partner Jonathan Brook, who runs the Martin Brudnizki Design studio\u2019s art advisory service in a Victorian mansion block in Parson\u2019s Green, southwest London. It\u2019s not just the rich assortment of works on display that amps up what is otherwise a serene, understated space, it\u2019s the fact that they\u2019re often hung cheek-by-jowl, wall-to-wall.
