\nGillian Hyland was tired of living in white boxes, and used blues and oranges, Formica and tiling to give her flat a vintage, characterful feelMost people would rip out an orange Formica kitchen, but the artist Gillian Hyland decided to put one in when she renovated her two-bedroom 1930s flat in London. \u201cI\u2019m really into colour,\u201d she says, \u201cbut the builders thought I was mad. It\u2019s the first apartment I\u2019ve owned \u2013 I was tired of living in white boxes.\u201d All the internal walls were knocked down; the kitchen now forms part of an open-plan living space. \u201cI wanted to make the kitchen pretty enough to be part of the living room,\u201d says Hyland, 36. She found an orange cooker, from Rangemaster, to match the cabinets, and offset it all with bright teal-blue walls and black walnut counters. \u201cI looked at a lot of mid-century kitchens online for inspiration,\u201d she says. \u201cFormica is brilliant: it\u2019s hard-wearing, wipeable and comes in a million colours.\u201d All the appliances are hidden away in the kitchen island.
