Plants give us something to come home toI have wanted a dog of my own for\u00a0as long as I can remember, but\u00a0as a child, I was never allowed to have one. Instead, I\u00a0had fleeting love affairs with other people\u2019s canines: Lassie, the lolloping sheepdog in Ireland; my friend\u2019s sprocker spaniel puppies; a neighbour\u2019s tiny bichon frise.I still dream of returning home to snuggle with my own puggle or miniature daschund, but each time I\u00a0seriously think about committing, I\u00a0hear my mum\u2019s voice: \u201cDon\u2019t you\u00a0dare! It\u2019s not fair on the dog!\u201d She is right. My life is decidedly dog-unfriendly and my weeks are peppered with\u00a0dinners, classes, meet-ups.
