\nWith the vision of creating spaces which are highly responsive to the tropical climate to allow members of the public to fully enjoy and perform within the buildings, Lawrence Ler of RSP Architects Planners & Engineers created the design for the Institute of Technical Education (ITE) College Central, reported Today Online.
\nOfficially opened in 2013, the school boasted the world\u2019s biggest vertical green installation which served as heat buffers while giving it a unique identity.
\n\u201cI believe that as an architect, I have the social responsibility to protect the environment we live in for our children and future generations,\u201d said Ler.
\n\u201cGlobal warming and resources depletion are real issues that we should not ignore, and every building we design can play a significant part to reduce the impact on our environment.\u201d
\nThe 39-year old architect emerged as one of 20 leading architects in Singapore featured in the \u201820 under 45: The Third Edition\u2019 exhibition and a book that was curated by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA), industry professionals and academics.
\nIn concurring, Ho Tzu Yin of LAUD Architects \u2013 the designer of social service hub Agape Village at Toa Payoh \u2013 revealed that he always convinces his clients of the benefits of having a sustainable building.
\nDP Architects director Seah Chee Huang, who designed Our Tampines Hub, noted that sustainable, green and inclusive design is a \u201cvital aspect\u201d of his work, especially that land is scarce in Singapore.
\nSpeaking at the launch, Minister for National Development Lawrence Wong urged architects to be \u201cinnovative and strive for higher standards\u201d. He also asked them to be involved in game-changing projects that will have a positive impact on Singaporeans.
\n\u201cPoorly designed cities can easily become a high-rise concrete jungle that is stressful to live and work in. On the other hand, well-designed buildings, homes, neighbourhoods with greenery and public spaces can improve our well-being and happiness,\u201d he said.
