\nAdmittedly, owning five dressing gowns wasn\u2019t sparking much joy \u2013 but the prospect of throwing everything out was still pretty terrifyingLast month, my daughter moved in with me for a\u00a0couple of weeks. \u201cI\u2019m going to Marie Kondo your house,\u201d she said. What? \u201cMarie Kondo. She wrote a\u00a0book on extreme tidying. You have to start with clothes,\u201d says Daughter, poking around in my airing cupboard and wardrobe with distaste. \u201cLook at this. Erk! You can\u2019t wear this! Why five dressing gowns? Oh my God! What\u2019s this? You can\u2019t keep anything that doesn\u2019t \u2018spark joy\u2019.\u201dWhat crap. There is no way on earth that I\u00a0am going to study every item in my house and discard it if it doesn\u2019t \u2018spark joy\u2019. But, just to be fair, we\u2019ll try it with the dogs\u2019 toys, which are mostly chewed, raggedy and grubby. We hold up each repulsive toy, but they all delight the dogs.
