Years ago, my parents-in-law retired to a house with a huge clump of dead bamboo in a two-acre garden. They gave me a pair of loppers to remove it. At the time I was a parish priest and the thing about that job is that it is never done. It took me two weeks to clear the bamboo and I loved it. I loved the muscularity of the work, but most of all the steady progress and the moment when the last cane came down. It was finished. That sense of being able to begin and end a task is so refreshing. My gardening knowledge is weak, although at theological college we did have a vegetable-growing syndicate. I specialised in carrots. Since then I have not grown a single carrot, but I could.
