\nAfter 18 months, the mystery surrounding the \u201cwaterfall\u201d lifts at a public housing block in Tiong Bahru has now been solved, reported TODAYonline.
\nBlock 10A Boon Tiong Road is connected via a concrete ramp to an adjacent block, which is a multi-storey carpark. Every time it rains, water coming from the carpark\u2019s roof garden is being carried by the ramp to the second floor lift lobby of the housing block, before flowing to the lift cars.
\nBased on the Housing and Development Board\u2019s (HDB) findings from its preliminary investigations on the latest incident on Wednesday (8 February), the \u201cwater could not be discharged quickly enough through the discharge points at the roof garden, which could be choked\u201d.
\nThe spokesperson revealed that the HDB and the Tanjong Pagar Town Council are now working together to rectify the problem.
\nOne of the solutions put forward by the town council is adding more drainage and a cover to the ramp to prevent rainwater from flowing into the lift lobby.
\n\u201cWe have also tried to ensure that the drainage at the roof garden is not clogged,\u201d said the town council\u2019s spokesperson, who assured residents that the lifts are \u201csafe for use\u201d since \u201cthe lift wires are covered up and our lift company regularly checks the safety of the lifts\u201d.
\nSome residents of the 40-storey block said they do not use the lifts whenever they see water falling down the shafts.
\n\u201cWith all that water, the electricity might trip,\u201d said a 52-year-old kindergarten teacher who wanted to be known only as Mrs Nee.<\/p>\n
