\nThe law still doesn\u2019t provide for people who choose to cohabit rather than get married. But there are ways you can ensure that a split is equitableA supreme court ruling last week in favour of two divorced women whose former husbands misled judges about how much they were worth is another step closer towards fairer treatment of separating spouses. But, unlike Alison Sharland and Varsha Gohil, unmarried couples who share a home are still left exposed to unfair settlements, leading lawyers have warned.More than 6 million couples in the UK cohabit, according to the Office for National Statistics \u2013 more than double the number 20 years ago. However, contrary to popular belief, a common-law spouse or partner carries no legal status in English law, meaning that the distribution of cohabitees\u2019 assets can end in lengthy and costly disputes.
