\nVietnam is getting an exceptionally short shrift on affordable housing, with the country now ranking as one of the least affordable markets in the world.
\nThe markets in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City have been inordinately focused\u00a0on the high-grade segment, i.e. residential properties priced at VND40 million (USD1,750) per square metre, according to Nguy\u1ec5n Tr\u1ea7n Nam, president of the Vi\u1ec7t Nam Real Estate Association .
\nOver 80 percent of market demand is pinned on homes priced at VN\u011020 million per square metre, but such properties are \u201cdifficult to find,\u201d Nam told Viet Nam News\u00a0(VNS).
\nDemand for affordable housing \u00a0has topped to 10 million square metres\u00a0to date, DTiNews reported. Yet existing housing stock has only met 3 million square metres of this demand.

\nVietnam now comes fourth in a list of countries with the highest property-price-to-income ratio in the world, VNS reported, citing data from Numbeo\u2019s 2017 Property Prices Index. With a property-price-to-income ratio of 37.15, Hanoi has been rated as the third least affordable urban market in the world.
\nNguy\u1ec5n V\u0103n \u0110\u1ef1c, deputy director of \u0110\u1ea5t L\u00e0nh Land, warned last year that housing affordability\u00a0in Vietnam could could snowball into \u201ca crisis.\u201d
\nAnother area of concern is the gloomy prospect\u00a0of land planning, with vertical developments not keeping up with\u00a0the country\u2019s booming population, especially in urban areas. \u201cHigh-rise buildings are essential to urban areas. The important thing is planning,\u201d Nam\u00a0said.
