Outside its peak season, the beautyberry (aka callicarpa) is an unremarkable \u2013 OK, boring \u2013 hardy deciduous shrub. But in late autumn and winter it puts on a show of what Monty Don has called \u201cthe most astonishing berries in the whole of the plant world\u201d. They persist long after the leaves have fallen, shining like clusters of amethysts throughout winter until the birds eat them.Any good varieties? Callicarpa bodinieri var. giraldii \u2018Profusion\u2019 is widely available in UK nurseries. If you\u2019re anti-purple, C. japonica \u2018Leucocarpa\u2019 sports ivory berries.
