\n\u201cMegatall\u201d structures are the new elite

\nAfter six years of construction, the Shanghai Tower was finally completed and is now the second tallest building in the world, the Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) announced.
\nWith this, the number of the \u201cmegatall\u201d buildings \u2013 measuring at least 600 metres \u2013 is now officially three.
\nDesigned by US company Gensler, Shanghai Tower measures 632 metres. It is located in the Lujiazui, the city\u2019s financial district. Construction began in late 2008, at the start of the global financial crisis.
\nThe government-owned skyscraper surpasses the last two tallest buildings in China: the Shanghai World Financial Center (492 metres) and the Jin Mao Tower (420.5 metres).

\nPer the International Business Times, Shanghai\u2019s first megatall tower cost between USD1.5 billion and USD2.4 billion. It features 400,000 sqm of floor space for retail, dining and hospitality.
\nIt was described as \u201cthe greenest super high-rise building on earth\u201d by architect Marshall Straballa, who worked on the original design.
\nThe steel-and-glass structure provides 24 percent savings due to its spiralling form, reported ArchDaily, when compared to a rectangular skyscraper of a similar height.
\nShanghaiist.com says the sustainable design reduced development costs by about USD58 million.
\nShanghai Tower adds to China\u2019s reputation as a major producer of tall structures. For the last eight years, the country has built the most number of 200-metre towers every year.
