\nEmily Mathieson has started an ethical homeware business from her house in St Albans selling goods made by vulnerable people, including trafficked women and the mentally illIt began with a wicker laundry basket. \u201cThat was my eureka moment,\u201d recalls Emily Mathieson. \u201cLast summer, at a local craft market, I bought this beautiful basket made by adults with learning disabilities. From then on, the idea for Aerende started to percolate.\u201dA former travel writer, Mathieson used her journalistic skills \u2013 \u201ctelling everyone, asking everyone, Googling endlessly\u201d \u2013 to work out if her idea for an online shop selling \u201clife-improving\u201d homeware was viable. Her criteria were strict yet simple, she tells me over tea and doughnuts at her kitchen table. \u201cThe products have to be made by people who don\u2019t have a normal route to selling their goods, and they have to be items I\u2019d want in my own home.\u201d In September, after a successful crowdfunding campaign, Aerende (pronounced a-ren-day) was launched.
