Each is filled with tightly wrapped, plastic-covered packets of pristine \u00a350 and \u00a320 notes. It seems like a good idea to ask Victoria Cleland, head of notes at the Bank of England, how much money is in each cage. &#8220;Well, there are 40 packets in each \u2013 you can do the maths,&#8221; she says. A label on one says it contains 5,000 \u00a350 notes. By my mental arithmetic, that&#8217;s \u00a3250,000 per packet. Or \u00a310m in each cage.To get into the vaults underneath the Bank of England, I have surrendered my purse (you are not allowed to carry money in, because you are certainly not allowed to carry any out) and my mobile, in case I take photos of the security measures.
