\nWe can now start sowing lettuce, radishes, chard, spring onions, beetroot, kale and more, for summer harvestThere are two dates that\u00a0herald the beginning of spring. The\u00a0one determined by\u00a0astronomy is the vernal equinox, when the sun is exactly over the Equator and\u00a0day and night are of equal length \u2013 that falls on 20\u00a0March this year. But I\u2019m more of a fan of the meteorological calendar, which marks spring\u2019s return sooner,\u00a0on 1\u00a0March \u2013 today. As auspicious as the equinox can feel, I\u2019ll\u00a0always opt for calling in spring as\u00a0early as reasonably possible.No matter when you mark the return of spring, the long, dark months of winter will soon be behind us and sunlight hours will increase day by day. With the light comes more warmth, signalling to dormant trees, bushes and seeds that it\u2019s time to consider waking from their winter slumber. It\u2019s the arrival of these optimal conditions that means many seeds can be sown around now \u2013 lettuce, radishes, chard, spring onions, beetroot, kale and more\u00a0\u2013 to be\u00a0harvested come summer.
