\nIf, like me, you store seeds for future planting, it\u2019s worth checking they will germinate. Luckily, the process is simpleI like to think of myself as an organised person, but if you met my seed box, you may disagree. It\u2019s a recycled shoe box that once housed wellies, with cardboard dividing it into\u00a0compartments labelled by plant family. Each section is a chaos of packets, envelopes, little jars and paper folded around seeds that have been bought, shared and saved. Not everything is labelled, some packets are empty and many of the seeds have\u00a0been hanging around for too\u00a0many years to still be fertile.Seeds don\u2019t last for ever, unfortunately. Their viability varies\u00a0depending on how long they have been\u00a0stored, the conditions they have been stored in and the type of seed \u2013 onion seeds, for example, are\u00a0best sown within a year\u00a0or two, whereas cucumber and kale seeds can\u00a0be stored for about five years.\u00a0 Generally speaking, a\u00a0seed will\u00a0last longer when it is kept in\u00a0the\u00a0opposite conditions to those required for germination.
