\nHardy varieties of these legumes can be grown through winter. Just remember to protect them from the weatherDespite my most recent columns being about how plants tend to stop growing at this time of\u00a0year and what to do during the dormant winter period, there are some that \u2013 somewhat miraculously \u2013 defy these seasonal patterns. One such crop is the broad bean, which, I have to admit, I\u2019m not a great fan of \u2013 that\u2019s why I rarely write about them. But I won\u2019t let my own tastes get in the way of sharing these magical beans with you.Broad beans \u2013 or fava beans \u2013 can be grown when warm-weather climbing beans cannot. Hardy varieties \u2013 Aquadulce Claudia is a popular choice \u2013 can be sown now and will emerge in a few weeks, if protected from the weather using some fleece or a cloche. If you\u2019re based in a colder region, you may be better off waiting until early spring to start growing, when you also get to choose from a wider range of varieties, including Sutton Dwarf, which can be grown in containers and small spaces, or Crimson Flowered, which produce deep pink flowers instead of the traditional white-and-black ones.
