\nI\u2019m tired of the dull, drab and mundane. Bring on the gold lam\u00e9 dresses and pomegranate-scented potpourriI devoured the journalist Hamish Bowles\u2019s recent account of his recovery from a severe stroke, not just because good writing on life-altering events is my favourite genre, but for the way it explored the role of beauty in his recovery \u2013 and his life.Bowles, who is World of Interiors\u2019 editor-at-large, was pondering buying a \u201c1930s gold lam\u00e9 Lanvin dress\u201d the day he was catapulted into the unlovely but life-saving surroundings of a stroke unit for 50 days, then into rehab for many more. He describes the things that first helped him to feel like himself, intubated and unable to speak, and those that shaped his long, slow convalescence. A \u201cpomegranate-scented terracotta potpourri\u201d, violet-scented face cream, lavender roses from Vogue\u2019s editor-in-chief Anna Wintour and an \u201cexquisite arrangement\u201d delivered by Marc Jacobs, who wore a \u201cwide-lapel jacket of shocking pink\u201d. Bowles\u2019s world gradually widens again in recovery, taking in Vermeer and Hockney exhibitions, and for his first trip home he wears a \u201cvintage amethyst corduroy Dries Van Noten suit\u201d.
