Bold, brash, blooms as big as your head, they can command devotion bordering on obsession among some flower-growers, especially \u2013 and intriguingly \u2013 among the relatively inexperienced gardener. This is, I think, because they can be straightforward to grow, and look good on Instagram.I suspect in some gardens dahlias have never been out of fashion. However, they\u2019ve certainly enjoyed a prolonged moment over the past decade. A couple of summers ago, though, I chaired a panel with experts Sarah Raven and Arthur Parkinson, who admitted to being a bit fed up with the cream-coloured queen of Pinterest, dahlia \u201cCaf\u00e9 au Lait\u201d. This, combined with their absence during the one-off September Chelsea flower show a few months later, had me convinced the dahlia\u2019s millennial reign was over. Nevertheless, they persevere on Instagram \u2013 and life is too short to grow flowers according to trends.
