\nThis design masterpiece in north London was once home to celebrated artists, architects and writers. Meet the man who has made it his dream homeNot everyone wanted Tom Broughton to buy the flat he now lives in. The tenant who was there when he viewed it three years ago said, \u201cYou don\u2019t want to live here. It\u2019s freezing. It\u2019s mouldy. You can\u2019t hang pictures.\u201d Broughton\u2019s surveyor \u201cstrongly recommended\u201d that he didn\u2019t go through with the purchase. And his parents were similarly baffled: \u201cYou\u2019re spending how much on a one-bedroom, ex-council flat?\u201d But Broughton persisted. \u201cI couldn\u2019t not,\u201d he says.The flat is on the fifth floor of the Isokon building, a sculptural, concrete behemoth in north London that is viewed as a modernist masterpiece. Design-led estate agency The Modern House called it \u201cone of the most important penthouses in London.\u201d Broughton didn\u2019t need convincing.
