\nPascale Georgiev, editorial director at Atelier \u00c9ditions, was researching botanical artwork a few years ago when she came across the US Department of Agriculture\u2019s pomological watercolour collection, an archive of 7,500 watercolours of fruit and nuts grown in the US between 1886 and 1942, mostly created before photography was widespread. The discovery led to a new book, An Illustrated Catalog of American Fruits & Nuts (Atelier, \u00a344), full of images that Georgiev describes as irresistible. \u201cThe belle angevine pear [left] makes my heart sing and I\u2019m partial to a plum named tragedy.\u201d She\u2019s also proud that the book showcases women working in science: \u201cNine of this US department\u2019s 21 artists were women. A rare thing at the time.\u201d Most of all she\u2019d like readers to think about biodiversity. \u201cI hope they share my delight in discovering the history of the fruit we consume, alongside beautiful artworks.\u201d Continue reading…
