{"id":122117,"date":"2021-09-21T03:49:25","date_gmt":"2021-09-20T20:49:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.siamlandbank.com\/propertynews\/property-news\/singapores-transport-system-must-be-reliable-resilient-ready-for-the-future\/"},"modified":"2021-09-21T12:08:04","modified_gmt":"2021-09-21T05:08:04","slug":"singapores-transport-system-must-be-reliable-resilient-ready-for-the-future","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.siamlandbank.com\/propertynews\/property-news\/singapores-transport-system-must-be-reliable-resilient-ready-for-the-future\/","title":{"rendered":"Singapore&#039;s transport system must be reliable, resilient, ready for the future"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/i2.wp.com\/www.siamlandbank.com\/propertynews\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/09\/MRT-singapore.jpg?fit=820%2C410&amp;ssl=1\" width=\"820\" height=\"410\">&#013;<br \/>\nMinister for Transport S Iswaran also lauded how Singapore\u2019s land, sea, and air transport workers have endured throughout the pandemic.<br \/>\nSingapore\u2019s transportation system and infrastructure must be reliable, resilient and ready for the future, reported Channel News Asia (CNA), citing Minister for Transport S Iswaran.<br \/>\nHe pointed out that the city-state\u2019s land, sea, and air transport workers had ensured reliable access to public transport and continued cross-border flows of goods and people throughout the pandemic.<br \/>\nThe Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore, for instance, had facilitated over 160,000 crew changes using safe protocols it developed with its partners.<br \/>\n\u201cIt\u2019s undoubted that COVID-19 will continue to challenge us,\u201d said Iswaran at an event marking the Ministry of Transport\u2019s 20th anniversary.<br \/>\nHe also underscored how Singapore\u2019s aviation hub partners had to deal with the Changi Airport cluster in May, while bus operators had to respond with an increase in infections among bus drivers.<br \/>\nThis \u201ccollaborative spirit\u201d in addressing the challenges brought about by the pandemic \u2013 even among competing firms \u2013 gave Iswaran the confidence that future challenges could be overcome and that reliability in the country\u2019s transportation system could be sustained.<br \/>\nAs to the transport system\u2019s resilience, Iswaran cited the example of how the marine sector was able to adapt its processes to keep supply lines intact and ensure that workers were safe.<br \/>\nHe shared that these efforts paid off, with Singapore remaining the top transhipment port in the world despite the COVID-19 pandemic.<br \/>\nIn fact, container throughput increased 3% between January and July this year compared to the same period in 2019, said Iswaran.<br \/>\n\u201cThat means that we are now above the pre-pandemic level, which I think is a very notable achievement,\u201d he said as quoted by CNA.<br \/>\nThe aviation sector also saw cargo volume through Changi Airport recover to pre-pandemic levels, said Iswaran.<br \/>\nNonetheless, the minister noted that national carrier Singapore Airlines (SIA) and Changi Airport were operating at 4% and 3% of pre-pandemic levels, respectively.<br \/>\nThis is despite the introduction of various schemes to facilitate essential and business travel, including travel from very low-risk areas.<br \/>\nOn the new vaccinated travel lane, the minister shared that several countries and regions had indicated their interest in opening such lanes with the city-state.<br \/>\nWith this, the authorities are \u201cactively working on expanding the scheme in the coming weeks and months\u201d.<br \/>\nIswaran added that Singapore should also be ready for the future, given that climate change is a \u201ckey long-term challenge\u201d.<br \/>\nHe said the country could play a \u201ccatalytic role\u201d in reducing emissions coming from maritime transport and international aviation.<br \/>\n\u201cAs a hub, we are also well-placed to drive research, test-bedding and adoption of greener fuels for shipping and aviation,\u201d he said, adding that the Government is reviewing the findings of a study on sustainable aviation fuels at Changi Airport.\u00a0<br \/>\n\u201cWhen green fuels are commercially viable, Singapore can help lower the emissions of every aircraft and ship that refuels in Singapore,\u201d said Iswaran.<br \/>\nLooking for a property in Singapore?
