\nA self-disinfecting coating has been sprayed on lift buttons in Singapore\u2019s Housing and Development Board (HDB) blocks, as a safeguard against viruses, fungi and bacteria.
\nTown councils across Singapore have coated 1.5 million lift buttons inside 26,000 HDB lifts and lift lobbies, reported CNA.
\nThis comes as Changi Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Changi Airport Group (CAG), donated 650 litres of coating, known as sdst, to all 16 town councils.
\nChangi Foundation explained that the coating is safe on human skin, eco-friendly and could last for three months.
\n\u201cThe sdst coating is effective in two ways. Firstly, it has a needle-like structure that ruptures the outer membrane of viruses, bacteria and fungi, thereby reducing their ability to infect,\u201d said CAG in a release.
\n\u201cSecondly, proprietary bonding agents in the coating allow it to adhere tightly to surfaces at a molecular level, such that even with repeated scrubbing and cleaning, the coating does not leach and remains effective for as long as three months.\u201d
\nCAG revealed that the trials it had conducted showed that the coating effectively provides longer-lasting protection on frequently touched surfaces.
\nCAG had applied sdst on frequently-touched surfaces in Changi Airport such as door handles, lift buttons, trolley handles and touch screens in February.
\n\u201cWe have stepped up efforts to clean and disinfect our blocks so as to reduce bacteria and virus transmission in view of [the] COVID-19 situation,\u201d said PAP Town Councils Coordinating Chairman Dr Teo Ho Pin.
\n\u201cThe use of this new protective self-disinfecting coating on our lift buttons will further reduce bacteria and virus transmission.\u201d
\nHowever, Dr Teo called on members of the public not to use pointed objects, like keys, when pressing the buttons since hard objects could scrape the coating off.
\nChangi Foundation\u2019s donation comes after Temasek Foundation distributed 500ml of hand sanitisers to each Singapore household.
