\nThe winning entry features a linear design that integrates lush greenery and foliage within a 5ha site in Bay East Garden.\u00a0
\nThe design for the upcoming Founders\u2019 Memorial at Marina Bay has finally been chosen, with Japanese firm Kengo Kuma & Associates and Singapore firm K2LD Architects emerging as the winner.
\nFeaturing a linear design that integrates lush greenery and foliage within a 5ha site in Bay East Garden, the winning design was unanimously voted upon as the winning entry by the seven-member jury. It bested four other shortlisted designs.
\nIt will have a lake, a forest trail, viewing gallery and an amphitheatre suitable for big gatherings.
\nThe jury panel lauded the submission for its place-making characteristics and distinctive architectural, landscaping, reported The Business Times.
\n\u201cThe winning design is sensitive and functional, and embodies the spirit and values of Singapore\u2019s founding team of leaders,\u201d said Lee Tzu Yang, Founders\u2019 Memorial Committee Chairman and head of the jury panel.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s a unique design, incorporating landscape and architecture, that brings visitors on a journey of discovery.\u201d
\nThe jury noted that the design had a thoughtful layout of spaces and allowed for connectivity to public transportation, good accessibility and integration with Bay East Garden, he added.
\nConstruction works for the memorial \u2013 which will be served by upcoming Founders\u2019 Memorial MRT station on the Thomson-East Coast Line \u2013 is set to start in 2022, and is expected to be completed by 2027.
\nKengo Kuma, the winning team\u2019s design lead, revealed that the concept for the design was inspired by the idea of a path which traces the legacy of the city-state\u2019s founding fathers.
\n\u201cIt simultaneously honours the past, and inspires the present and future,\u201d he said. \u201cThe design aims to be a living memorial, to be owned by each new generation of Singaporeans.\u201d
\nNotable works of his firm include Tokyo\u2019s National Stadium, Yusuhara Wooden Bridge Museum in Kochi, Japan and Scotland\u2019s V&A Museum Dundee.
\nMeanwhile, works by his local partner K2LD Architects include Singapore\u2019s Christ Methodist Church and China\u2019s Yong Tai Red Cliff Visitor Centre.
\nLast January, an international architectural design competition was launched to find the best design for Singapore\u2019s new landmark. It attracted submissions from 193 architects in Singapore and overseas, with the list eventually trimmed down to five.
\nThe shortlisted designs were then showcased in a roving exhibition, where more than 50,000 members of the public selected their favourite design.
\nWhen picking the winner, the jury took into consideration the responses.
