{"id":114746,"date":"2020-03-06T11:19:09","date_gmt":"2020-03-06T04:19:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.siamlandbank.com\/propertynews\/property-news\/govt-to-invest-60bil-for-renewal-and-expansion-of-rail-network\/"},"modified":"2020-03-06T12:04:03","modified_gmt":"2020-03-06T05:04:03","slug":"govt-to-invest-60bil-for-renewal-and-expansion-of-rail-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.siamlandbank.com\/propertynews\/property-news\/govt-to-invest-60bil-for-renewal-and-expansion-of-rail-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Gov\u2019t to invest $60bil for renewal and expansion of rail network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&#013;<br \/>\nThese include the completion of the Thomson-East Coast Line, construction of Jurong Region Line and Cross Island Line (first phrase) as well as the renewal for both East-West and North-South MRT Lines.\u00a0<br \/>\nAfter experiencing several high-profile rail operations disruptions, the government will invest over $60 billion in the renewal and expansion of its rail network in the next decade.<br \/>\n\u201cThe hard lesson learnt by the problems earlier faced by SMRT is that we must invest in good operations and maintenance,\u201d said Minister for Transport Khaw Boon Wan on Thursday (5 March) during the Committee of Supply debate for the transport ministry.<br \/>\nIn 2017, an MRT tunnel flooding resulted in more than a 20-hour disruption of service on the North-South Line.<br \/>\nKhaw revealed that the $60 billion will be spent on a number of projects \u2013 such as the Thomson-East Coast Line\u2019s (TEL) completion by 2024 as well as the construction of the Jurong Region Line (JRL) and the Cross Island Line\u2019s (CRL) first phase by 2028 and 2029, respectively.<br \/>\nBy 2025, the existing lines \u2013 Circle, North-East and Downtown lines \u2013 will also be extended, increasing the city-state\u2019s rail network from the current 230km to 360km, reported CNA.<br \/>\nThe rail expansion works will bring about 80% of people within walking distance to an MRT station by 2030, said Khaw, who also serves as Coordinating Minister for Infrastructure.<br \/>\n\u201cWe will have achieved or exceeded the level of train connectivity enjoyed by the residents in Hong Kong, Tokyo and New York today,\u201d he noted.<br \/>\nMajor renewal works on Singapore\u2019s oldest lines \u2013 the 32-year-old East-West and North-South MRT Lines as well as the 20-year old Bukit Panjang LRT \u2013 are also slated for completion over the next few years.<br \/>\nRead:\u00a014 Freehold Private Condos That Are Within 500m From the East-West Line<br \/>\n\u201cIn time, we will also need to renew the next oldest lines \u2013 North-East Line and Sengkang-Punggol LRT,\u201d said Khaw.<br \/>\nCommenting on the proposed Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System Link, Khaw noted that the project is suspended until end-April this year.
