\nStuart Paterson\u2019s favourite hunting ground is the other side of the Channel, especially during brocantes \u2013 antiques market seasonStuart Paterson is used to being stopped at customs. When asked what\u2019s in his van, his stock response is: \u201cJust a bunch of knackered antiques the French don\u2019t want.\u201d Foxed mercury mirrors, rusty garden tables, patched fabrics and stacks of battered white tableware can all be found in his possession. \u201cI\u2019m searching for the jolie laide, the pretty-ugly,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s an aesthetic that has a certain frisson that stops a piece being too elegant, beautiful, or expected. I don\u2019t do important antiques: I do antiques with character.\u201dDuring brocantes, or antiques market, season, Paterson drives to France in his clapped-out van at least once a month to source antiques. Mostly, his stock is sold to\u00a0the trade; they draw up a shopping list and Paterson does the hard graft. \u201cThat\u2019s the bit I love: the thrill of the chase.\u201d But the public can buy his wares, too, either at his south London workshop, by appointment, or at a monthly market stall.
