\nCompleting a self-assessment tax return remains daunting for many of the 10 million people required to do so, but you can minimise the pain \u2013 and possibly the bill itselfNearly four million of the 10.2 million people in Britain required to fill in tax returns have not yet sent them in \u2013 and they now have less than four weeks left in which to do so. Last year 890,000 taxpayers missed the 31 January deadline and paid a \u00a3100 fine, with extra penalties for severely late returns. Yet for most people the online forms should take no more than a couple of hours \u2013 and you even have the luxury of taking your time as you don\u2019t have to complete it all in one go.If you have not yet started yours there is no need to panic \u2013 yet. Just follow our guidelines below. If, however, you are a self-assessment first-timer you do need to get your skates on as you will have to obtain an \u201cactivation code\u201d in order to kick-start the process. This is only sent out in the post and takes around seven working days to arrive. In other words, you\u2019ll have to apply for an activation code no later than Thursday 21 January to have any hope of meeting the\u00a0deadline. Continue reading…
